How to avoid uterine prolapse?

It may not be entirely possible to avoid a uterine prolapse. However, there are several things you can do to reduce your risk of experiencing pelvic organ prolapse.

Uterine prolapse is generally caused by weakening of the pelvic floor muscles combined with weakness or stretching of the support structures that normally support the uterus and upper vagina.

Regular Kegel exercises can help. Kegel exercises can improve both strength and coordinatino of the your pelvic floor muscles, especially in women who have recently given birth.

In addition, managing constipation can also help you reduce your risk for a pelvic organ prolapse. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and eat a high-fiber diet to limit constipation.

Another risk factor for a uterine prolapse is obesity. By avoiding weight gain and practicing healthy exercise and eating habits, you can help decrease your likelihood of a uterine prolapse.

In some instances, pelvic organ prolapse can occur as a result of long-term, repetitive, heavy lifting.

If you are experiencing any illnesses that resulting in chronic cough, seek medical care to manage your cough. Long-term coughing conditions can cause pelvic floor muscles to weaken, thereby causing a uterine prolapse.

Finally, smoking both increases chronic cough and damages the connective tissues that normally support the pelvic organs. If you smoke, quitting is likely the number one thing you can do to improve your overall health (and reduce your risk for prolapse at the same time).
