Uterine prolapse is caused by a weakening of the tissues that normally support the uterus and upper vagina as well as the pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic organ prolapse, of any kind, is simply a hernia of the pelvic organs.
As these tissues begin to weaken over time, they may become unable to support the weight of the uterus and the upper vagina, allowing them to move into the vaginal canal and toward the vaginal opening.
Risk factors for uterine prolapse include age, childbirth (especially vaginal delivery), smoking, repetitive heavy lifting, chronic constipation, and obesity.
