With proper treatment, a uterine prolapse can possibly be reversed or improved, depending on its severity. After diagnosis with a uterine prolapse, your doctor will discuss treatment options best suited for you and your goals. A uterine prolapse occurs when the pelvic floor muscles and supportive tissues begin to stretch and weaken over time. These important tissues help to support your pelvic organs like the vagina, uterus, bladder, and rectum.
In women with mild or moderate uterine prolapse, pelvic floor exercises can help to reverse your prolapse and/or improve symptoms. These exercises are designed to strengthen these specific muscles and can be done in the comfort of your own home.
One such exercise is referred to as Kegel exercises. Your doctor can provide information to teach you how to properly perform these exercises. S/he may also refer you to a pelvic floor physical therapist who can work with you to improve strength, coordination, and relaxation of these muscles.
In women with more advanced uterine prolapse, pelvic floor exercises may not be as effective. In these cases other treatments, such as surgery or a vaginal pessary, are available. A pessary is a small silicone device which can hold your uterus in place to improve your symptoms.
